5 signs it's time to size up
Most parents size up too late, not too early. Sizing up earlier than the weight chart suggests is often the right call โ diapers leak from too-small not too-big.
1. Red marks around legs or waist when you remove a diaper = too tight. Size up.
2. Frequent leaks (especially overnight) = volume capacity exceeded. Size up.
3. Blowouts up the back = poop is bypassing the waistband. Almost always a sign to size up.
4. Diaper looks small with belly hanging over the top = visible test. Size up.
5. Approaching the top weight for your current size = size up before you hit the cap.
๐ก Tip: Use the bigger size for overnight (more absorbency) and the smaller size for daytime if your baby is between sizes.
Brand comparison โ which diaper for which baby?
Pampers Swaddlers (newborn-favorite)
Best newborn diaper on the market. Color-changing wetness indicator, umbilical cord notch, ultra-soft. Run slightly small โ many parents size up around 10 lb.
Huggies Little Snugglers / Little Movers
Slightly more generous fit (run larger) โ good for chunky babies. Little Movers have a stretchier waistband for active toddlers.
Honest Company
Plant-based, hypoallergenic, fun patterns. Run TRUE to size. Good for sensitive-skin babies but expensive per diaper.
Hello Bello
Comparable to Honest but cheaper. TRUE to size. Good middle-ground option for parents who want plant-based without Honest's price tag.
Amazon Mama Bear / Amazon Elements
Budget-friendly. Subscribe & Save discount makes them 40% cheaper than Pampers/Huggies. Surprisingly absorbent. Run a TINY bit small but most parents don't notice.
Coterie (premium)
$$$ but rated #1 by many parent reviews. Best leak protection. Worth it for blowout-prone babies + overnight.

Frequently asked questions
How many diapers does my baby need per day?
Newborn (0โ3 months): 8โ12/day. Older infant (3โ6 months): 6โ8/day. Toddler (1+ year): 4โ6/day. Plan to buy ~2,000โ2,500 diapers total in your baby's first year.
What size diaper for a newborn?
Size N (Newborn) typically fits 5โ10 lb. If your baby is 8+ lb at birth, skip N and start with Size 1 โ you'll only get 1โ2 weeks out of N. Premie sizes exist for babies under 5 lb.
Should I stockpile diapers before baby arrives?
Yes for size 1 and 2 (buy 1โ2 boxes each). NO for newborn โ many babies outgrow them in 2 weeks. Don't stockpile a size you haven't tested fit on yet.
What's the most absorbent diaper?
Pampers Baby Dry (overnight focus), Huggies OverNites, Coterie, and Bambo Nature are rated highest for absorbency. Stock these specifically for overnight.
Disposable vs cloth diapers?
Disposable: easier, more absorbent, lasts ~3 hr. Cloth: 30% cheaper over baby's first 2 years, need washing 2ร/week. Many parents do a hybrid: cloth for daytime at home, disposable overnight/travel.
When do babies stop using diapers?
Most kids potty train between 24โ36 months. Daytime usually first (around age 2โ3), then nighttime (around age 3โ5). Pull-ups and overnight pants are a transition product for ages 2โ5.
