Frequently asked questions
Conversions follow widely accepted industry charts, but no brand is required to conform to them. A "US 8" at Zara fits differently than a "US 8" at Gap. Treat conversions as a starting point and always check the specific brand's measurement chart when ordering online.
Yes — Zara consistently runs small, especially in tops and dresses. This is because Zara designs using European and Spanish size standards, which are cut narrower than US or UK equivalents. A general rule: size up one from your usual US size when shopping at Zara. For example, if you're usually a US 8 (EU 40), try EU 42 at Zara.
EU clothing sizes (like 36, 38, 40) are derived from chest or bust measurements in centimeters, while US sizes (2, 4, 6, 8…) are arbitrary numbers that have shifted upward over decades through "vanity sizing." EU shoe sizes are based on the length of the last used to make the shoe (in Paris points, roughly ⅔ cm). These disconnected systems are why a direct formula rarely gives exact results.
Use a soft tape measure directly against your skin, not over clothing:
Bust/Chest: measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape horizontal. Waist: measure around the narrowest part of your torso, usually 1 inch above the navel. Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, about 8 inches below the waist. Neck (men's shirts): measure around the base of the neck, leaving room for one finger.
Always measure twice. For the most accurate result, have someone else take the measurement.
EU size 38 corresponds to US women's size 8 (and UK 12). This is a "medium" in letter sizing. However, because European brands often cut smaller, you may find that an EU 38 from a brand like Zara or Mango fits more like a US 6 on the body. When in doubt, measure yourself and compare to the brand's specific size chart.
Measure your foot length in centimeters from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe. Do this at the end of the day when feet are at their largest. Japanese shoe sizing uses this number directly — so 25 cm = JP 25. Use the "Find My Size" tab above and select Shoes to convert to US, UK, and EU equivalents instantly.
Yes. Uniqlo is a Japanese brand and sizes based on Japanese body proportions, which tend to be narrower through the shoulders and chest. Most American and European shoppers should size up 1–2 sizes. If you are usually a US Medium, try a Large or XL at Uniqlo, and check the cm measurements on each product page to confirm fit.
As a rough guide for women's US sizing: each dress size represents approximately 1 inch in bust, 1 inch in waist, and 1 inch in hips. Losing about 10–15 lbs typically drops one US dress size for many body types, though this varies widely based on where you carry weight. Use the "Find My Size" measurement calculator above with your projected measurements to estimate your future size.
