What is mondopoint?

Mondopoint is the international standard for ski and snowboard boot sizing. It's just your foot length in centimeters. A 26.5 mondopoint boot fits a 26.5cm foot.

Why it exists: ski boots are precision equipment. Half a centimeter difference can be the difference between "perfect day skiing" and "had to leave by lunch with bleeding shins." Mondopoint avoids the confusion of converting between US/EU/UK sizes when your performance depends on a tight fit.

How to measure correctly

1. Stand on a piece of paper against a wall, heel touching wall.

2. Wear a thin ski sock (not regular socks โ€” they're thicker).

3. Mark your longest toe (often second toe). Press the pencil down firmly.

4. Measure heel to mark in mm, divide by 10. That's your mondo size.

5. Measure both feet, use the larger one. Use the same number for ski boots regardless of foot asymmetry.

How a ski boot should actually fit

Counter-intuitive truth: ski boots should fit TIGHTER than regular shoes. Most casual skiers buy boots 1โ€“2 sizes too big and wonder why their feet slide around.

Proper fit signs

โ€ข Toes BARELY brush the front when standing straight.

โ€ข Toes pull AWAY from the front when you bend your knees (skiing stance).

โ€ข Heel locks in with minimal lift (โ‰ค 3mm).

โ€ข Pressure feels even โ€” no hot spots.

โ€ข You can wiggle toes slightly. If you can't, it's truly too tight.

Wrong-fit signs

โ€ข Toes hammer the front when going downhill = too small. Replace.

โ€ข Heel lifts more than 3mm = too big OR wrong shape. Refit.

โ€ข Numbness, tingling = too tight OR cinched wrong. Loosen + re-buckle.

โ€ข Calf pain = wrong flex rating, not size.

Flex rating โ€” what it means + what to pick

Flex is the stiffness of the boot. Higher number = stiffer. Skiers want it matched to their ability + body weight.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between ski boot and street shoe size?

Ski boots use mondopoint (cm). A 26.5 ski boot โ‰ˆ US men's 8.5 / EU 42 in street shoes. Don't assume your street size = your boot size โ€” measure your foot in cm.

Are ski boot sizes unisex?

Mondopoint sizing is unisex. But women's boots have narrower heel cups and lower cuffs โ€” many women's feet (especially with smaller calves) need a "women's" boot at the same mondo size for proper fit.

Should snowboard boots fit the same as ski boots?

Snowboard boots are softer overall but should still fit snugly. They use both mondopoint and US sizing labels. Pick the US size from the chart above for snowboard boots.

Can I size up if my boots hurt?

Try this FIRST: a boot fitter can "punch out" (heat-mold) painful spots on most modern boots for free or cheap. Only size up if multiple visits to a fitter don't solve it.

How long do ski boots last?

About 150โ€“200 ski days, or roughly 5โ€“10 years for a recreational skier. The plastic stiffens with age + UV. If your boots are over 10 years old, the binding compatibility may also be outdated โ€” replace.
