Necktie Length & Width Guide
Get the right tie length and width for your height and the suit you're wearing. Plus bow tie sizing.
How a tie should fit โ the rules
Length: tip of the tie should hit the TOP of your belt buckle. Anything shorter = looks like a child's tie. Anything past = looks too long.
Knot size: should match shirt collar spread. Wide spread collar = full Windsor or half Windsor knot. Standard collar = four-in-hand or simple knot.
Width vs lapel: tie blade width should match suit lapel width (give or take ยฝ").
Tail: the back (smaller) blade should be SHORTER than the front blade. Tuck into shirt buttons or behind the front blade.
Bow tie sizing
Pre-tied: sized like a shirt collar (15", 16", 17"). Match exactly to your shirt size.
Self-tied / freestyle: "one size" with adjustable strap. Strap adjusts from ~14"โ18".
Bat wing vs butterfly: bat wing is narrower (1.5โ1.75"). Butterfly is wider (2.5โ3"). Match to your face: rounder face = bat wing (slimming). Narrower face = butterfly (balance).
