Tent & Sleeping Bag Size Guide
Capacity ratings explained, sleeping bag sizing by height, and temperature ratings for camping.
Tent capacity — the truth
"2-person tent" means 2 people sleeping shoulder-to-shoulder with NO gear inside. For real-world comfort:
Rule of thumb: buy a tent rated for 1 MORE person than will sleep in it. Sleeping 2 = buy 3P. Sleeping 4 = buy 5-6P.
Reasons: gear storage, hot weather space, dog/kid sprawl, putting on layers without bumping into your tentmate. The 1 oz extra weight per person is worth the comfort.
Sleeping bag temperature ratings
Ratings show the LOWEST temp the bag handles. But ratings are inconsistent — "comfort" rating (what most people feel comfortable in) is 10–15°F warmer than the "lower limit" (where most people get cold).
| Rating type | Recommended for |
|---|---|
| 50°F+ (10°C+) | Warm summer, indoor sleepovers |
| 30–50°F (-1 to 10°C) | Spring/fall, mild climate |
| 15–30°F (-9 to -1°C) | Cold-weather camping, alpine |
| -5–15°F (-21 to -9°C) | Winter, snow camping |
| Below -5°F | Expedition / mountaineering |
💡 Layering hack: a sleeping bag liner adds 5–15°F warmth. Cheaper and more versatile than buying a colder-rated bag.
Sleeping bag length by height
| Bag size | Your height | Bag length |
|---|---|---|
| Short / Junior | Up to 5'3" (160 cm) | 66" (168 cm) |
| Regular | 5'3"–6'0" (160–183 cm) | 78" (198 cm) |
| Long / XL | 6'0"–6'6" (183–198 cm) | 84" (213 cm) |
| XXL | 6'6"+ (198 cm+) | 90" (229 cm) |
FAQ
Down vs synthetic sleeping bag?
Down: warmest per oz, compresses smaller, $$$, USELESS when wet. Synthetic: heavier, bulkier, $, works wet, dries fast. For dry conditions: down. For canoe/wet: synthetic.
Do I need a sleeping pad?
YES — the ground absorbs body heat. A pad's R-value (insulation) matters as much as bag temperature rating. R 2-3 for summer, R 4-5 for 3-season, R 6+ for winter.
Mummy bag vs rectangular?
Mummy: warmer (less air to heat), lighter, restrictive. Rectangular: roomier, can fully unzip, heavier. Backpackers: mummy. Car campers: rectangular OK.
What size tent for 2 + a dog?
3-person tent. Standard 2P tents are 50–60" wide — barely fits 2 sleepers shoulder-to-shoulder, no room for a dog. 3P tents are 70–80" wide.
