Sock cut styles + when to wear them
No-show / liner
Invisible under loafers, sneakers. Most popular for summer. Tend to slip off heel โ silicone-grip versions stay better.
Ankle / quarter
Goes just above the ankle bone. Athletic socks. Most common for running, casual wear.
Crew
Mid-calf. Standard daily wear, workout, hiking. Best balance of warmth + visibility.
Mid-calf / trouser
Above the calf. Dress socks. Should NOT slip down (the cardinal sin of dress socks).
Over-the-calf / knee-high
Below knee. Dress, formal, equestrian, compression. Stays up best โ won't bunch at ankle when sitting.
FAQ
Why are socks sized "M / L" instead of foot length?
Stretch! Cotton-blend socks stretch ~30%, so a single "L" fits a 9โ12 size range. Wool and merino stretch less โ sizing is more precise.
I'm between sock sizes โ up or down?
Down for athletic socks (compression keeps them in place). Up for dress and merino socks (better drape, no toe pressure).
How often should I replace socks?
Athletic socks: every 6 months. Dress socks: when the heel/toe thins. Wool/merino: every 1โ2 years. The minute you can see your skin through the heel = retire.
Best socks for sweaty feet?
Merino wool (Smartwool, Darn Tough). It regulates temperature + wicks moisture better than synthetics. Counterintuitive โ wool is best for HOT feet too.
