The 7 measurements professional wig makers use

For a basic stock wig, your head circumference alone is enough. But for custom wigs, lace fronts, or extreme cosplay, you need all 7:

1. Circumference โ€” around the whole head, just above ears.

2. Front to nape โ€” from hairline at the forehead, over the crown, down to the nape of the neck.

3. Ear to ear (over top) โ€” from in front of one ear, over the top of the head, to in front of the other ear.

4. Temple to temple (around back) โ€” across the back of the head.

5. Nape โ€” across the back of the neck where hair starts.

6. Ear to ear (across forehead) โ€” across the front hairline.

7. Hairline at temple โ€” measure where your natural hairline curves at the temple.

The 3 standard wig cap sizes

Petite / Small

Head circumference: 19โ€“21.5 inches (48โ€“55 cm). Fits about 20% of adult women. Common for petite frames, alopecia, post-chemo when scalp is sensitive.

Average / Medium (most common)

Head circumference: 21.5โ€“22.5 inches (55โ€“57 cm). Fits about 60% of adult women, 40% of adult men. The default for most stock wigs.

Large

Head circumference: 22.5โ€“23.5+ inches (57โ€“60+ cm). Fits about 20% of women, 60% of men. If a wig isn't labeled "large," it's probably average โ€” be careful.

๐Ÿ’ก Most quality wigs have adjustable straps in the back that let you take in or let out the cap by 1โ€“2 cm. Always check for these before ordering.

Special considerations

For alopecia areata / totalis

No hair underneath means a slightly looser wig โ€” accommodate with a "wig grip" headband or silicone hairline tape. Measure circumference WITHOUT hair underneath to get true scalp size.

For chemo patients

Buy 1 wig before hair loss starts so you can match your color/style accurately. Measure your head NOW. After hair loss, your scalp may be tender โ€” choose a soft cotton cap underneath. Synthetic wigs over human hair wigs for chemo (easier to wash, lighter).

For cosplay / costume

Most cosplay wigs are "one size fits most" (average). For very dramatic styles (anime spikes, long lolita curls), the visible part is the wig โ€” not the cap. If your head is at the edges of average, layer with a tight wig cap underneath for security.

For thick natural hair underneath

If you're wearing a wig over braids, cornrows, or thick natural hair: add 1โ€“2 cm to your scalp measurement to account for the hair. Or wear a smooth wig cap underneath to flatten.

Cap construction types

Basic cap (cheapest)

Solid stretch cap, no parting visible. Best for fashion / costume. $20โ€“80.

Capless / wefted cap

Open-weft construction โ€” cooler in summer. Most common middle-tier option. $50โ€“150.

Monofilament top

Fine mesh at the crown that mimics scalp. You can part the hair in any direction. $150โ€“400.

Lace front

Sheer lace at the forehead โ€” hair looks like it grows from your scalp. Most natural-looking. $200โ€“600.

Full lace

Lace covers the ENTIRE cap โ€” can be parted anywhere, pulled into ponytails. Premium option. $500โ€“2000+.

Silicone medical cap

For alopecia / chemo. Stays on without glue or tape due to silicone grip. Most expensive but most secure. $1500โ€“4000.

Frequently asked questions

What's the average wig cap size?

About 22โ€“22.5 inches (56โ€“57 cm) circumference โ€” "Medium" or "Average" on most wig labels.

What if my wig is too big?

Use the adjustable straps inside the cap to tighten. If that's not enough, sew a small piece of elastic into the cap interior โ€” easy to do at home. Or wear a wig grip headband.

What if my wig is too small?

Most caps stretch with wear and heat from your scalp. Wear it for 30 min before deciding to return. If still too tight: use the adjustable straps to loosen (rare), or โ€” sadly โ€” return it.

Synthetic vs human hair wigs?

Synthetic: $30โ€“300, holds style without restyling, doesn't tolerate heat (max 350ยฐF for "heat-friendly synthetic"). Lasts 4โ€“6 months daily wear.
Human hair: $200โ€“2000+, styles like real hair (curl, dye), needs restyling after each wash. Lasts 1โ€“3 years daily wear.

Do I need a wig cap underneath?

If you have hair: yes โ€” flattens hair, protects scalp, prevents wig from shifting. If you're bald: optional, but a soft cotton cap protects sensitive scalp and absorbs sweat.

How do I clean a wig?

Synthetic: cold water + wig shampoo, swirl gently, rinse, lay flat. Human hair: similar but use sulfate-free shampoo + leave-in conditioner. Both: never wring, hang on a wig stand to dry. Clean every 10โ€“15 wears.
