What's in a typical school uniform?
UK schools
Polo shirt (or button-up), trousers or skirt/pinafore, school sweatshirt or cardigan, blazer (for senior school), tie (for some), school shoes (typically black leather), PE kit. Most schools have specific suppliers; "generic" uniforms work for everything but blazers.
US schools
Most US schools don't require uniforms, but private/charter schools commonly use: polo shirt + khaki pants or pleated skirt. Size US numerical kids' sizes (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16).
Australian schools
Similar to UK but designed for warm weather: polo shirt + shorts (boys) or summer dress (girls) for summer term; long pants or skirt + jumper for winter term. Sized by age, same as UK.
European schools (countries with uniforms)
France, Spain, and other EU countries with uniforms size by height in cm: 110, 116, 122, 128, 134, 140, 146, 152, 158, 164, 170 — same as general EU kids sizing.
Tips for back-to-school shopping
1. Size up. Kids grow an average of 2 inches per year. If you buy "to fit now" in August, the uniform won't fit by Christmas. Size up 1 year — the cuff/hem can be turned up at first.
2. Buy multiples of consumables. Polo shirts wear out fastest (and get the most stains). Buy 5+. Trousers/skirts: 2–3 pairs. Blazer: 1 (size up).
3. Check brand consistency. Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Tesco F&F, ASDA George, and Next are the main UK uniform brands. Mix-and-match between them as they share sizing standards.
4. Iron-on labels save tears. Lost uniform pieces are the #1 cause of midweek panic. Label everything before week 1.
5. Iron-on hem tape handles minor length adjustments without sewing. Useful when you sized up.
